WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION

adblogoWorld Health Organization (WHO) was established in 1948. Its main objective is the attainment, by all peoples, of highest possible level of health. WHO works with governments in improving health care and in securing the active participation of the public in health matters. Among its priorities are the development of human resources for health, environmental health, eradication and control of selected diseases, exchange of information and experience, health promotion and strengthening health management.

Established in the Philippines in 1951, WHO works with the Department of Health and other government agencies, as well as with non-governmental organizations. Project areas include national immunisation, baby-friendly hospitals, safe drinking water, safety of chemicals and disposal of hazardous wastes, and the national AIDS control programme. Manila is also the location of WHO's Western Pacific Regional Office.

WHO in the Philippines

WHO support to the Philippines is focused on national health priorities and programs of the DOH. Among UN agencies, WHO plays the central role in coordinating health.
WHO’s support to the MDGs, are guided by four interrelated strategic directions:

1. Advocacy and partnership -- WHO’s function is catalytic, by facilitating linkages, communication and interaction;

2. Health sector development – WHO aims to facilitate better service delivery in a decentralized environment through provision of technical advice, tools and guidelines and through capacity development;

3. Health for unreached populations -- WHO aims to respond faster and better to health needs of unreached mothers and children, particularly in slum areas, among indigenous peoples, and adolescents;

4. Control of disease risks -- WHO works to reduce health risks that are emerging due to environmental, socio-economic and technological changes, while continuing the efforts for infectious diseases control, like Measles, Tuberculosis, Malaria and HIV/AIDS.

Many of WHO’s achievements in the Philippines are attributed to its strong linkage with the DOH as well as active coordination/collaboration with other UN agencies and development partners.
