PGMA determined to achieve MDG targets |
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has directed concerned agencies to develop strategies to attain commitments under the Millennium Development Goals (MDG). The President issued the directive as she welcomed Dr. Jacqueline Badcock, the new United Nations Resident Coordinator and Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in the Philippines. At their meeting in Malacañang’s Music Room, President Arroyo and Badcock discussed the progress of six of the eight MDG goals and the challenges facing the Philippines and many other countries with regard to universal basic education and maternal mortality rate.

WFP distributes rice rations from large Japanese donation to Mindanao |
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today began providing thousands of displaced people in Mindanao with vital rice rations thanks to a large donation from the Government of Japan.
At a ceremony in Maguindanao, the Ambassador of Japan to the Philippines, HE Makoto Katsura, and representatives from Philippine government and WFP witnessed the first distributions of rice purchased with the Japanese donation of 455 million Philippine pesos (860 million Japanese yen) to assist people affected by conflict and internal displacement in Mindanao.

Anti child porn bill pushed |
TARLAC Rep Monica Nikki Prieto Teodoro yesterday urged her colleagues in the Lower House to pass House Bill 6440 or the Anti Child Pornography bill on third reading next week.
She said decisive action on the bill will send a strong signal to pedophiles and child pom Website-makers that government is serious about shutting down their activities for good.

UN Expert Commemorates International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples |
"Since assuming my mandate over a year ago, I have witnessed that indigenous peoples continue to face many impediments to the enjoyment of human rights, despite some important advances," said James Anaya, Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights and fundamental freedoms of indigenous people, on the occasion of the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples.
The adoption of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples in September 2007 by the United Nations General Assembly was a milestone, culminating in two and a half decades of study and discussion. This achievement, among other things, is a testament to the courage and resilience indigenous peoples have displayed in their determination to survive, and demonstrates their relative success in increased recognition on the world stage.
